When I stumbled across the "English only" section a few days ago, I was wondering why it seemed to be almost dead. There is really not much going on.
So I thought we might give it a try and start some sort of chatroom where we could talk about all kinds of things in English in order to improve our language skills. And maybe some native speakers or expatriates could offer some corrections?

What do you all think?

(If you are not too enthusiastic about the idea, it won't hurt if this thread dies like many of the others ;))

Want to give it a try?

Can we learn(ing) E(e)nglisch too in the chatroom, or is it for (perfect´s) perfect speakers of English?

Hi Sonja!
Nice to meet you.
Well, my idea was that everybody (no matter how good their English is) can write something here and can get corrections (if they don't mind), so that they can improve their English.

Let's see if some more people are interested.

Maybe I should tell you something about myself. I haven´t been in this forum very long, but I have found it very helpful so far for planning my trip to the States this summer.
I am not a native speaker of English, so any corrections of my posts are always welcome, too.

I live in the beautiful Allgäu, and I love to go cycling through this terrific landscape. What else can I say? I have a hubby and two children (13 and 14 years old - a terrible age, I can tell you...)

Perfect language skills aren't a requirement for any thread in this forum. ;)

I have to leave you now, but "I'll be back" (I wonder where I might have heard that before... ;)) tomorrow, and I can't wait to see whether some more people will have joined us here.

Good night,

Hi Anu!
I do hope to see you here more often.

What a pity that people do not seem to be too interested in this chatroom. I would have loved to learn more about the forum members here, and to communicate in English at the same time.

And I was actually looking forward to reading dozens of posts here... ;)

How did you all come across this forum in the first place?

Hi, I saw the link and was kind of curious, but -oh well- time is always an issue. your English is very good, BTW, Anamaxi.
( hope I got the name right )

I have just come back from a 1 hour presentation of our company to a career class of senior HS (High school) students.
Have no problem with speaking commitments at all.

The forum is somewhat tedious for me, as my brain is thinking English most of the time, except when I talk to my husband and daughter. Our home language is a quite atrocious mix of Denglish. We've lived here in Oregon for more than 15 years, and there's a lot of things such as computers and the like that we've only acquired here and I have zero vocabulary for it in German. Also, hobbies that have been picked up since immigration with the special lingo involved.

And of course, I barely read German outside of this forum except the occasional glance at focus news magazine. So it's all going down the drain LOL.

still, I appreciate being able to write the way I think, and not having to wrap my head around German composition

Welcome back, Sonja! ;)

But if you feel you would like to be better at English, here is your chance! Just talk to us here.

May I offer a tiny correction? "I must learn(ing)..." --> You do not use the -ing-form after "can / may / must / etc...", just the infinitive (the basic form of the verb)

And may I ask what the 1964 in your nick stands for? If it means what I think it might mean, then we have something in common. ;)
And where in the States have you been so far?

Have a nice evening,

candice

*edit*

Oh, hi Poloele! (Had to check the spelling of your nick twice )
Nice to meet you!
BTW, you can either call me candice or anamaxi - both of which are not my real names, of course. I´m not quite ready to give away too much information in this forum, since I haven´t been here very long and don´t know people very well here.

So you live in Oregon with your husband and daughter? How old is your daughter, if I may ask? Was she born in the States already? And is she truly bilingual? That must be great.

And what kind of company is your company? What do you do there?

(Please, just answer my questions if you feel like it; I do not want to be too inquisitive... just curious..., and happy that I was able to lure somebody else into these premises.

1st of all, poloele stands for my former kitty's name, it actually was Mipo, but this was his pet (sic!) name.

we arrived here in December 1994, our company is in music electronics. Our daughter was 11 when she came here, now 27, and she is truly bilingual. Guess it was just the perfect timing for her. She is currently at Northwestern in Chicago and starts her PhD dissertation this summer, for communication studies.

Ah, I see.

And what were your reasons to emigrate to the States in the first place, if I may ask?
I spent 1 1/2 years in Austin TX where I studied at UT. It was very hard for me to go back to Germany, and I would have loved to stay, but I was running out of money since I only had a scholarship for a limited time, and wasn´t allowed to work with my student visa.

Do you still go back to Germany regularly?

BTW, what is a "career class" at high school?

*edit* I just googled "Coos Bay", because I have to admit that I had no idea where it was. So you live near the sea; that is great! Must be a beautiful place to live...

*edit again* OT: I just noticed that all of a sudden there are two little stars under my nick. What do they signify? I guess it has something to do with the number of posts?

I´m off now. See you all - and hopefully some new participants - tomorrow.

Hi Ladies, this is a nice way to improve our english. I need more practice. I can understand a lot, but I have problems to speak it in the correct way, means I often have problems with the right grammar.
So, I will be happy, when you would like to correct my mistakes.
I 'm 45 years, living in Germany, and I am a BIG USA-Fan. I love this country and the people living there. In 5 weeks we travel again in the USA, this time in the North East of this beautiful country!

Wish you a good night!

Best greetings - yours Pia:tongue:

well, but you are already trying, and it will get better every day.

and yes, Caprice, Coos Bay is just lovely, our company is right next to the bay, and it's another 10 minutes to the Pacific.

the reason we came here was the increasingly hostile business climate in Germany, over taxation and over-regulation by the government
We knew the US well, and already had a subsidiary import office here at the time we moved the whole company.

I've been back to Germany 3 or 4 times since 1994, last time in 2005 I think. I have no plans to go back there, all our parents are dead, their ashes are actually here on the cemetery.
We all have American citizenship and did not retain the German one either.

re. career class: It is a class to provide seniors with information and knowledge about work place requirements and different industries

If you wanna improve your English skills... start an online role playing game like WoW or Everquest... if anyone is interested... let me know. We all could start on the same server and I'm sure it will be lots of fun.
