RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- The Arab satellite network Al-Arabiya says American hostage Paul Johnson has been beheaded. U.S. officials have not yet confirmed the report.

CNN reports that photos published on the Internet appear to show Johnson beheaded.

In a statement dated June 15, a group calling itself Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula says it will kill U.S. hostage Paul Johnson if the Saudi government doesn't release militants within 72 hours.

Johnson's captors had set today as a deadline for Saudi officials to release their al-Qaida captives. They said they would kill him if their demand wasn't met. The Saudis had rejected the demand.

Johnson, a Lockheed Martin employee, was kidnapped Saturday by a group believed to be led by al-Qaida's top man in Saudi Arabia. Johnson's captors aired a video of him Tuesday, saying they would kill him unless Saudi Arabia releases all al-Qaida prisoners within 72 hours. The kidnappers did not specify when the countdown would begin or end.

Security forces were searching for clues in the desert up to 6 miles outside Riyadh on Friday. Police in Saudi Arabia had also been scouring fundamentalist strongholds and stopping cars at checkpoints throughout the city.

But there had no indication the American contractor was closer to being found. A senior Saudi official in the United States who is familiar with the investigation said U.S. and Saudi officials have had few promising leads in their search.

Some Riyadh residents suggested the kidnappers have popular support, partly because of U.S. policy in Iraq and its perceived backing for Israel.

Saudi newspapers quoted unidentified officials Friday as saying the government will not give in to the demands of terrorists.

A former Saudi deputy interior minister said security forces in his country lack sufficient training in fighting terrorists. But he told Saudi TV, "They are learning." He called on average citizens to cooperate more.

Meanwhile, a top Saudi cleric pleaded with the kidnappers to free Johnson. He said in a newspaper column that the terrorists have "trodden the wrong path."

Johnson's Wife Makes Plea

Thanom Johnson, the hostage's wife, appealed for her husband's release. She told the Saudi-owned TV channel Al-Arabiya that seeing a video of her blindfolded husband makes her think of the medicine he needs. In a wavering voice, she pleaded, "Please bring him back to me."

Johnson's son and other family members are believed to be staying at his sister's house in Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J. There's been no sign of activity at the home Friday.

Reporters and nearly a dozen TV news crews are gathered outside.

Candlelight vigils were held Thursday night in Johnson's hometown and in Florida, where he lived before moving to the Middle East.

Filmmaker Michael Moore's biting satire has Brits biting back in London after he mocked Sept. 11 passengers as "scaredy cats" and then publicly berated theater staff as "conmen," according to press reports.

Columnist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown writes in the London newspaper The Independent that she took her son to Moore's one-man comedy act "Michael Moore - Live!" at the Roundhouse theater in Camden, North London, and became so "enraged" she almost walked out.

"Moore went into a rant about how the passengers on the Sept. 11 planes were scaredy cats because they were mostly white," Alibhai-Brown writes. "If the passengers had included black men, he claimed, those killers, with their puny bodies and unimpressive small knives, would have been crushed by the dudes, who as we all know take no disrespect from anybody."

"God save us from such stupid white men," comments Alibhai-Brown in a reference to Moore's best-selling book, "Stupid White Men," and then accused the "Bowling for Columbine" creator of being insensitive toward the increasing violence, lawlessness and racism plaguing the city's black community

wir muessen unbedingt stark bleiben und nicht diesen unmenschen nachgeben.

Ich frage mich, wie lange die gegenwärtige saudi-arabische Regierung noch bestehen wird, falls sie nicht härter durchgreifen. Abgesehen von den ausländischen Firmenangestellten nach deren Leben getrachtet wird.
Das kann noch schlimme Folgen haben, die man im Moment noch nicht abschätzen kann.

Gute Frage heiner, auf den Protest, Aufschrei, Empoerung, Demonstrationen etc. all dieser Gutmenschen die sich so ueber die angebliche Folter aufgeregt haben, warte ich schon lange.

Vermutlich stehen die aber alle derzeit an, um Karten fuer den Film ihres Idols M. Moore zu bekommen

The murder of Paul shows the evil nature of the enemy we face. These are barbaric people. There's no justification whatsoever for his murder, and yet they killed him in cold blood. And it should remind us that we must pursue these people, and bring them to justice before they hurt other Americans. See, they're trying to intimidate America. They're trying to shake our will; they're trying to get us to retreat from the world. America will not retreat. America will not be intimidated by these kinds of extremist thugs.

Na, heute so um mittag unserer Zeit war eine größere Pressekonferenz in der saudischen Botschaft in Washington. Dabei wurden auch Bilder von dem toten Al Queda-Anführer al-Mukrin gezeigt mit einigen Richtigstellungen, denn die Presse hatte mal wieder ironische Angaben gemacht.
Allerdings ist dieser Spiegelbericht noch etwas rückständig in dieser Beziehung:
