Understanding the South & the Southern way of life ... Books/Inputs?

I live in Atlanta - the heart of the South - for over two years now. I am also married to a "real" Southern Woman and we live a pretty southern lifestyle. Traveling a lot to other places in the United States, I am convinced that the Southern Way of Life is pretty unique, amazing and that this is is a darn cool place to live.

As a "real" German, there is a lot about the South I am not understanding yet. Does anyone know some good resources and/or books? There is a great article on Wikipedia, but I would love to find more resources and books.

A discussion about the Southern Lifestyle would be great too, maybe we can share experiences

    Thanks!
    Ben

Yeah, I was seriously asking myself that if I would cultivate my drinking habits I'd be considered a Southerner within 3 hours ... I mean ... I talk some kind of southern dialect after enough can beer. But anyways: I am still serious about my original post.

    Dear Ben in Atlanta

I have never lived in the South. However my mother and father in law are from the South or let me rephrase that, they weren't born and raised in the South but spent a majority of their life in the South before moving to Arizona and my husband grew up in the South. My in-laws are the greatest people, so nice and outgoing and really really friendly. My mother in law talks to anyone and everyone and is always in a good friendly mood.

My husband has been all around the world with the Army and is not the typical Southern guy, but every once and a while he has a cute little southern draw in particular when he gets around other people that speak with a southern accent/draw, however not very strong though, just a tiny little bit. He said it used to be worse when he grew up but he pretty much lost all of his southern accent when he went into the Military and was stationed in so many different places and met people from all over.

As far as me I would love to live in the South, every one I have met so far from the South was very friendly and very open. I cannot say the same about the people here out west. They are not as "chatty" and keep more to themselves. I'm a very open and outgoing person and I love talking to other people and getting to know other people and usually I'm in a good mood therefore I think I wouldn't have a problem "fitting in" as far as my personality. The weather is always warm and humid there another plus for me

I also like the food in the South, nothing better than a dinner/lunch at my mother n law's house. Well maybe one day I will get to live in the South one of them days, I wouldn't mind it at all.

All the best to you and your wife and your life in the South - sorry I can't be of any help with books about the South. Never read any.

LOL... you forgot hunting & fishing though...

While we're at it, here's some more "funny bones" within that context :

(sorry @Ben, that's probably not what you were in fact looking for... )

Been livin' in the real Deep South for about four years now and lovin' it... - in spite of all the prejudice I had before I first got here! Laid-back, easy-going way-of-life; real friendly and outgoing people, and lots of "socializing" even with complete strangers; that certain kind of humor (a little "rough" amongst friends, and also really "black humor" at times), and people will actually laugh about themselves just as they will about others; great sea food and cajun cuisine; live oaks full of spanish moss; "scenic drives" with "Gone-With-The-Wind"-style "mansions" along the way...

Of course, there's "negatives" as well, just as everywhere else... - but still, overall, I feel very much "at home" down here... and yes, I love to fish, too...
