Utility companies want to pass along higher fuel costs to customers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Utility company customers may be feeling the affects of skyrocketing fuel prices.

Hearing are being held by the state's Public Service Commission on whether several electric companies can pass on to customers the higher cost of making electricity. The utilities include the two biggest in the state Florida Power and Light and Progress Energy.

The companies have been hit hard by higher fuel prices, primarily because of a spike in world demand.

The law allows electric companies to pass on higher-than-expected fuel costs, but doesn't allow them to make a profit on the higher charges.

The projected monthly average increases would be 15 dollars for FPL and 12 dollars for Progress Energy.
