Nach Zeitungsmeldungen will British Columbia bald seine Alkohlgesetze ändern und "BYOB" einführen. Damit dürfen in Restaurants Gäste ihre eigene Flasche Wein mitbringen. Das Restaurant stellt nur die Gläser zur Verfügung und öffnet die Flasche. Dafür dürfen sie dann eine Korkengebühr von ca. 15 CAD bis 20 CAD nehmen.

BYOB ist bisher in British Columbia gesetzlich verboten, während es in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario und Quebec erlaubt ist.

Suit filed over Nanaimo airline plane crash that killed three

A Nanaimo-based airline and the families of a pilot and a passenger who died in a crash are being sued for damages in B.C. Supreme Court.
The lawsuit stems from the crash of a Cessna float plane as it flew from Tofino to Ahousaht on May 29, 2010. The plane was operated by Atleo River Air Services...

The pilot, Damon York, died in the crash, along with his three passengers - Edward Jonathan Jeremy Sam, his sister, Katrina Sam-English, and his cousin, Samantha Mattersdorfer, all from Ahousaht.


The common-law wife of Edward Sam, Melissa Ann Schram, is suing the airline, York and Mattersdorfer for unspecified damages on behalf of herself and the couple's twoyearold daughter.


Ahousaht is a First Nations community accessible by water and air that does not permit the sale or possession of alcohol.


Before boarding the flight in Tofino, the three passengers had been turned away from the water taxi service because they were all drunk and were attempting to transport several bottles of liquor and a case of beer to Ahousaht.


A report by the Transportation Safety Board concluded that the plane plummeted from 500 feet above sea level into the sea, two nautical miles from Ahousaht. A steep nosedive on that particular aircraft requires considerable pressure on the controls, the board said.


Mattersdorfer, who was seated behind the pilot, sustained two broken ankles in the crash and may have been bracing her feet on the back of the pilot's seat, the board report said.


York was wearing a lap belt but was not using the detachable shoulder belt.


His seat did not have a locking mechanism to prevent it being pushed forward by force from behind.


Only York and Katrina Sam-English, seated in the rear, right passenger seat, were wearing seat belts when the aircraft hit the water.
The plane's occupants either died on impact or from trauma combined with drowning.


A statement of claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court on March 25 alleges that Atleo Air Services and York were negligent in the operation and maintenance of the plane.


The aircraft was poorly suited to provide air taxi services and had known hazards such as a lack of lock on the front seats. The pilot should have been trained to request all passengers wear their seat belts, the document says....

Investigators say all three passengers had been drinking heavily on the day of the crash when they chartered York's flight to return home.

According to CNN affiliate CTV, Vancouver has one of the largest floatplane flotillas in the world. Sixty-seven percent of victims killed in floatplane accidents die from drowning because they cannot exit the plane as it sinks, a CTV report said.


Canadian officials have recommended installing pop-out windows and quick-release doors on floatplanes, but those recommendations have never been enforced. The lawsuit targets the plane operator for failing to make the necessary changes to the floatplane.

Ich bin in einem Alter, wo ich keine Flasche mehr mitbringe. Die trinke ich zu Hause in Gesellschaft doch besser alleine...

Ich frage mich, ob sich dies so einfach durchsetzen wird. In Alberta geht es ja schon seit ein paar Jahren, aber ich habe noch nie in einem Restaurant gelesen, dass BYOB angeboten wurde bzw. dass wirklich mal jemand seine eigene Flasche mitgebracht hat.

Vieleicht liegt es daran, dass in den Rocky Mountains so viele Touristen unterwegs sind. Ein paar Dollar mehr oder weniger für eine Flsche Wein in einem Restaurant haben auf die Gesamtkosten eines Urlaub kaum Auswirkungen und die vielen Amerikaner scheinen dies eh nicht zu kennen.

Und schon wieder eine Neuerung:

Man darf ab sofort Bier und Wein aus anderen kanadischen Provinzen nach British Columbia bringen ohne dass man sich strafbar macht. Bisher war dies verboten (auch für Konsumenten).

Oje, da bekomme ich ja nachträglich noch totale Panik. Wir haben bisher schon immer unseren Wein quer durch Kanada (und auch aus den USA nach Kanada) gefahren. Haben einfach da eingekauft, wo es am günstigsten war. Und haben gar nichts von diesem (blödsinnigen, darf man das so sagen?) Gesetz gewusst!

Ok, das nächstemal ist es wenigstens dann legal.
