WESTLAKE, Ohio—
It's been a tough New Year for the Thaxton Family of Westlake.
"She started vomiting, she started having diarrhea. I took her into the vet on Saturday, November 12th, and on Monday, the blood tests came back that she was in kidney failure," said Candace Thaxton.
The Thaxton's were forced to put down their 10-year-old Pug, Chaunsey.
But little did they know that the problem may have started in
Chaunsey's chicken jerkey snacks.
"We were giving our other dog, Penny, treats from the same bag. The only common thread between the two dogs was these treats. They didn't share the same dog food. Penny was on a different brand of puppy food," added Thaxton.
Less than two weeks after Chaunsey's death, their five-month-old puppy, Penny, went into kidney failure.
"I feel like I poisoned both of my dogs. I know that it's not my fault. But I basically handed them poison. Because that's what I did," cried Candace.
And the Thaxton family is not alone.
Reports of illnesses in dogs have increased dramatically after the FDA warned pet owners about chicken jerky products made in China.
The Thaxton family gave their dogs Waggin' Train Jerky Tenders.
"Although everyone tells me it's not my fault, it's sad seeing my pug go through it and then watching my puppy go through it. And I don't want anyone else to go through it," said Candace.
Waggin' Train released a statement that said, "We have a dedicated team of quality control experts in China - particularly, in the plants - when Waggin' Train products are being produced. The safety and efficacy of our products is our top priority."
Meantime, the FDA is still trying to pinpoint the exact source.
As for the Thaxton's, it's become an expensive wait.
"Almost around 4,000 dollars total, between the two dogs and the vets, the animal hospital and we're not done there," added Kevin Thaxton, Candace's husband.
"I don't know how many dogs it's going to take before they do something to stop bringing this crap in," added Candace.
The Thaxton's said they filed a claim with Waggin' Train Products.
They are also considering filing a complaint with the Attorney General's Office.
